SILK IVORY LAYERING TOP

Silk is a beautiful luxury fabric that keeps you warm or cool. Layering tops are a big essential for modest dressing and there are not enough in luxe fabrics! So I set out to make one of my own.

The goal was to make a top that can easily be worn with pants or skirts as well as under sleeveless or sheer dresses and tops.

I used this non-stretch Ivory Silk fabric which was leftover lining from my Strapless Leather Dress. It was just enough to make this matching top and scarf set!

Since there is no stretch in this fabric, the fit had to be the perfect balance for an easy pull-on and wear-under top while not being overtly tight or loose!

It took about 2 days to make – drafting the pattern, cutting and sewing. I finished all raw edges quickly by serging. Since this was a first sample of this style, I didn’t focus on a beautiful finish. The serge finish is not bad for a layering top though!

There is keyhole opening with a 1-button closure at center back. Next time I need to tweak my back bodice block to get rid of the excess fabric in my lower back. I have a very curved lower back and am short-waisted, so fabric pooling in my lower back is a typical issue. Anyone else have the same??

I’m happy with the sleeve and front bodice pattern, they fit just right.

For the scarf, I serged the raw edges as well. As a scarf, the fabric could use a wash in hot water to soften it up for a more beautiful drape.

I’m excited to sew more silk layering tops! What do you think? Do you need a Silk Layering Top in your life?
